Faridabad (Haryana)

ESIC Medical College & Hospital, Faridabad has achieved a major milestone in advanced pediatric healthcare by successfully treating a rare case of Wiskott–Aldrich Syndrome (WAS) in a 3-year-old child through a matched sibling donor Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). This marks one of the significant achievements in the management of rare primary immunodeficiency disorders in the ESIC healthcare system.
Wiskott–Aldrich Syndrome (WAS) is a rare X-linked inherited immunodeficiency disorder affecting nearly 1–10 children per million live male births globally. The disease is characterized by recurrent infections, eczema, low platelet counts, bleeding tendencies, and increased susceptibility to autoimmune diseases and malignancies. In developing countries, delayed diagnosis and lack of timely transplantation contribute to higher mortality rates. Bone marrow transplantation remains the only definitive curative treatment for this condition, with international survival rates exceeding 85–90% when performed early using a fully matched sibling donor.
The child underwent an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant using stem cells collected from a fully matched sibling donor. Stem cell harvesting was performed using a specialized apheresis machine, enabling safe and efficient collection of peripheral blood stem cells. Following the conditioning regimen, the collected stem cells were successfully infused into the recipient.
An essential component of the transplant process was the comprehensive support provided by the Department of Transfusion Medicine. The patient received irradiated blood components, including Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBCs) and Single Donor Platelets (SDPs), ensuring safe transfusion support during the transplant journey while minimizing the risk of transfusion-associated Graft-versus-Host Disease (GvHD) and other complications.
The patient has now achieved successful engraftment, indicating that the donor stem cells have effectively established healthy blood cell production within the recipient’s bone marrow. The child is recovering well under close supervision of the transplant team.
The multidisciplinary transplant team included Dr. Silky Jain, Brig. Dr. Tathagata Chatterjee, Dr. Saroj Rajput, along with the Department of Pediatrics.
Dr. Chavan Kalidas Dattatreya and the hospital administration congratulated the transplant team on this landmark accomplishment and reiterated their commitment to providing advanced, affordable, and life-saving healthcare services for patients suffering from complex hematological and immunological disorders.
This achievement further strengthens patient trust and confidence in the advanced healthcare facilities available at ESIC Medical College & Hospital, Faridabad. The availability of such state-of-the-art transplant services is highly beneficial for ESIC Insured Persons (IPs), ensuring access to high-quality, affordable, and specialized medical care within the ESIC healthcare system.
